How do you design and construct your own home? While, most people have absolutely no design or construction experience the best way to come up with a workable design which can easily be implemented is to keep the tips below in mind.
1. Craft a rough design of what you want your home to look like
The first step is deciding upon what type of home to build. There are a number of different styles of home to choose from which gives you a number of ideas to draw from. When you see a home you like, the next step is to figure out what things you like about the home. Make a list of what you like or a small sketch. This will help you understand how to piece everything together into the final design.
2. Make a home design list
When you create a list of criteria for a home design you should start with the few basics that you know i.e. number of bedrooms, bathrooms, family areas, whether you want a formal dining room or just a open area, porch or just a deck etc. Only once you have listed all the basic features you want, you can then start planning for every room individually. Start with listing the most important features to add. This can include master bathrooms, kitchen features, sound system, phone connections and internet connections etc.
3. Check your zoning laws
Your area’s zoning laws have a direct affect on everything from the yard to the roof. Familiarize yourself with the zoning laws in your area so that you don’t have a problem later.
4. Maximize your space
When in the process of mapping your floor plan you need to ensure that everything flows properly. The idea is to make things easy for your contractor as he goes about building what you want. Here are a few things you ought to consider:
You should have direct access going from your kitchen to your garage
All the plumbing should be in one area as this will reduce the overall plumbing distance
Your air conditioning, ventilation and your heating system needs to be as central as physically possible. This allows you to efficiently control the temperature in your home
Ideally, you will want your bedrooms to be isolated in order to increase privacy and reduce overall noise
Your washer and dryer should be on the same floor as the bedrooms
Your doorways, stairways and hallways should be wide enough so that it’s physically easy to move furniture of all size.
5. Keep sunshine in mind
The position of the sun can directly affect your home in numerous ways. A home that faces south will be warm during the winter but will be very hot during the summer. If you want to take advantage of all the natural sunlight that hits your home make sure that you have large windows.
